The story opens in Ho Chi Minh City, with the main character and his “Butler” seeking their informant. They find him, and Artemis blows the man’s disguise and petrifies him by explaining how many weapons his Butler has. Then, we discover Artemis is only Twelve years old. Artemis finds a Fairy, borrows its Book, a kind of bible that all Fairies have to carry with them at all times, and copies it. The story switches back and forth between him and Fairy Captain Holly Short. Artemis translates the Book from Gnomish into English, the only human ever to do so in thousands of years. He captures Captain Short, after a troll almost killed her, demands the LEP (Lower Elements Police) ransoms fund, and gets it. Then, the troll is released into the house, to kill everyone before being subdued and the ransom fund retrieved. It doesn’t work out that way, however. Butler fights the troll and beats it, and nearly kills it before Captain Short tells him to stop. Artemis then gives Captain Short half of the ransom fund for her to cure his Mother, who has been mentally ill since the Russians killed or captured Artemis’ father. Then, the LEP blows off a Blue Rinse inside the Time Stop field, which should have killed all living things inside the house. However, Artemis claims to have found a way to escape the time field.
